Brexit and what it may mean for your Aetna policy

Aetna Insurance Company Limited (AICL), a UK based insurer, currently underwrites plans for members who are residing in the European Economic Area (being the EU 27 plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) (EEA).  As a result of the UK leaving the EU (Brexit), AICL will no longer underwrite plans for such EEA based members.  In future, Aetna’s EEA plans will be underwritten by Aetna Health Insurance Company of Europe DAC (AHICE).   AHICE is an insurer authorised and regulated in the Republic of Ireland with passporting permissions throughout the EEA.

This change will take effect from 1 October 2020 and means that all new customers residing in the EEA will be offered an AHICE policy.  Existing customers who currently hold an AICL underwritten policy and who either reside in the EEA or who have employees as part of a group scheme residing in the EEA will be offered an AHICE policy at their next renewal.

AHICE’s offer to underwrite any such EEA policies is subject to standard acceptance criteria and policy terms and conditions.  However, please be assured that there will be no change to plan benefits for existing AICL customers.

These changes are necessary to ensure that we continue to meet our regulatory obligations pursuant to Brexit, and that cover remains compliant with local regulations.  Brexit will have no impact to Aetna policies with customers residing in the UK.

Your Aetna policy may be affected if you reside, or if you have employees who are residing, in an EEA member country. We will make you aware if your policy needs to move to AHICE during the renewal process. After renewal, any group or individual scheme that is moved to AHICE will be issued with a new policy number.
